When we heard we were going to Mexico, Vivien and I decided to put "Hiking a volcano" on our bucket list. After discussing with several friends, we picked La Malinche, an inactive volcano situated about 2h30 East of Mexico. It's the fifth highest volcano of Mexico with an elevation of 4462 meters (14,640 feet) and was the perfect challenge for us.
Quand Vivien et moi avons appris que nous partirons au Mexique, on a fait quelque recherche sur ce qu'il y avait à avoir dans le pays et on est tombé sur des photos de randonnée de volcan: on a tout de suite ajouté l'idée à notre liste d'objectif de notre séjour! On a choisi La Malinche, un volcan inactif de 4462m à l'Est de Mexico.
In order to reach the volcano, we took a bus form Mexico to Apizaco (a bit more than 2 hours) and spent a night there. It's quite a small city with nothing much to do. Most restaurants were closed after 8pm. As we arrived late on a Saturday night, we ended up having pizza at a local restaurant close to our hotel.
Pour aller au volcan, on a pris un bus jusqu'à Apizaco (environ à 2 heures de Mexico) et on a passé la nuit là bas. C'est une petite ville où il n'y a pas grand chose à faire et la plupart des restaurants étaient fermé le soir. Comme on est arrivé tard, on a du se contenter d'une pizza au marchand du coin pour faire le plein de glucides!
We woke up early in order to take a taxi directly to the Centro Vacacional Malintzi, where the hike starts. There also are collectivos who could take you there, which are much cheaper but there is only one per hour. As we wanted to start hiking early, we paid 290 pesos to a nice taxi driver who seemed to be used to take hikers like us. The ride took around 45min.
On s'est levé assez tôt et on a filé dans un taxi qui nous a amené au point de départ de la randonnée. Il y avait aussi des bus mais ils ne sont pas très pratiques: il n'y en a qu'un par heure... Comme on voulait commencer la randonée en début de matinée, on a opté pour un taxi. Le chauffeur était sympa et avait l'habitude d'amener des randonneurs étrangers comme nous.
We started our hike a little before 9am. We had our backpacks full of food and water, but if needed, there are some vendors at the starting point of the hike. As it was a Sunday, we encountered many families at the beginning. After one hour, the hike started to become a bit more difficult and we only saw well-equiped hikers, most of them had sticks.
On a commencé à marché à 9h, nos sac à dos plein de vivres pour la journée! Comme on était Dimanche, on a croisé plein de famille au début. Puis au bout d'une heure, le chemin a commencé à pas mal monter et ils ne restaient que les plus vaillants!
The air was fresh and smelled like pine resin, I enjoyed every breathe I took! As I said, after an hour ascending, the hike become more difficult: the path was very steep and breathing became a bit harder. At this stage, the landscapes was mainly composed of trees and birds singing.
L'air était frais (une dizaine de degrés) et sentaint la résine de pin, j'ai eu l'impression de nettoyer mes poumons de la pollution de Mexico! Comme je le disais, au bout d'une heure, ça commençait a devenir un peu plus dur et la combinaison altitude/effort rendait notre respiration un peu plus difficile. A ce stade là de la randon, le paysage était composé d'arbre et de petit oiseaux qui chantaient.
After two hours (10 am), we reached the treelines: no more forest, there were only dry grass, sand and rocks. We had a little break for snacks on some rocks before starting the hardest part of the ascension: we were now around 4 000m high and the 200 remaining meters were EXTREMELY steep.
Au bout de 2h, on a atteint la fin de la forêt et il n'y avait plus que des touffes d'herbes sèches et des cailloux. On a fait une petite pause avant d'attaquer la partie la plus dure: l'ascension finale jusqu'au sommet.
The ascention was quite an adventure: the ground was mainly made of sand and rocks so it was slipery. At some point we had to crawl in order to climb. After one long hour and a half (12h30 am), we reached the peak! It was very cloudy up there, unfortunately, we did not enjoy that great of a view, but we were very proud of ourselves :)
La montée finale a été inoubliable.. Le sol était surtout consitué de sable et des cailloux alors ça glissait énormément. A certain moment, il fallait que je monte à quattre patte et que je m'aggripe aux touffes d'herbe pour ne pas glisser! Après une longue heure et demi, ça y est, on a atteint le sommet. Pas de chance, il y avait plein de nuages là -haut et on n'a pas trop pu profiter de la vue mais on était sacrément fiers de nous !
After taking some pictures, we started goign down: it was much easier, but still very slippery! We took only 2 hours, the total of the hike was 5h30 (breaks included). This time, we took a collectivo to go back to Apizaco (20 pesos each). There is one every hour and we had to wait for the 4:00 pm one. It dropped us close to Apizaco bus Terminal, where we took another bus to Mexico DF (Terminal Poniente). The day after, Vivien & I got very sore in our butt but we were happy we went on this adventure!
Après avoir pris quelques photos (et retrouvé notre souffle) on a entammé la redescente. Là aussi, ça glissait beaucoup. On faisait de beaux dérapages, j'avoue être tombée deux ou trois fois sur les fesses... On a eu d'ailleurs eu énormes courbatures aux fessiers le lendemain! Au total, la randonnée nous a pris 5h30 et c'était une superbe expérience.
