Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca

Vivien & I spent our time off during the holy week in the beautiful city of Oaxaca. One of the highlight of our 4-day getaway was going to the petrified waterfall, Hierve el Agua. It was quite an adventure to get there, but once we made it, I was impressed by this strange geological phenomenon.

Situated at around 70km east of Oaxaca City, going to Hierve El Agua was a real challenge! First, we took a bus from Oaxaca to Mitla (20 pesos). Once in Mitla, we took a collectivo, in photo below (50 pesos). Riding in these was probably the most uncomfortable experience we ever had in our lifes.. We were actually 8 persons squizzed in the back of the truck and the road was very bumpy.

At some point, I felt more like an illegal immigrant about to cross the border than a tourist!! After 2 long hours, we finally reached the site. We had, as always, a great weather and warm temperatures (32°C).

There are two "waterfalls". These aren't actual waterfalls, they are made of a mineral deposit/rock left by water, which is why we call them "petrified". They kind of reminded me of very big stalactics.

Since the area offers two natural pools, it's a great place for the oaxaqueños (and tourists) to chill and refesh during warms days. The pools are made of cold mineral water which boils out of the rocks and drips down the waterfall.

One of the pool is actually at the edge of a cliff and makes a truly beautiful infinity pool! Needless to say that this spot is the most sought-after spot of the site and I had to be very patient to take a photo ;)

There is a nice 40-minutes hike from the waterfalls. If you are not too sensitive to the heat, you can have a more intimate experience walking around a cactus jungle. Of course, Vivien and I prefered hiking than swimming with the crowd. While the pool area was quite crowded, we did not see anyone hiking.. I wonder why!

The hike offers a close view from below the waterfall. It's quite impressive!
